ICON ORGANIZING TIPS

Cover these in more detail in the chapter on window tips but I was afraid you might come here instead looking for ways to organize your icons so I’ll quickly recap them in this one tip:
  • To have your icons snap to an invisible alignment grid (and help keep them organized in rows) press Command-J and in the View Options dialog choose Snap to Grid.
  • If you don’t have Snap to Grid on and you want a particular icon to snap to the grid just hold the Command key while you drag the icon.
  • To have your icons sorted alphabetically in rows, go under the View menu, go to Arrange and then choose BY Name from the pop-up list.

DUPLICATING FILES THE FAST WAY
Want to copy a file? Piece of cake – just hold the Option key, click on the file’s icon and drag yourself a copy. This makes an exact duplicate of the entire file and it’s even courteous enough to add the word “copy” to the end of the file name.

ICON SUPERSIZING TIP
They’re your icons; choose your favorite size. You can control the size that your icons appear when viewing a window in Icon view by pressing Command-J which brings up the View Options dialog. You’ll find a slider there where you can size your icons to your heart’s content and there’s a pop-up menu for choosing the text size. You can also choose whether this icon size is just for the current window or make it across the board in every window by choosing All windows.

INSTANTLY FINDING THE ORIGINAL FOR ANY ALIAS
Since an alias is just a copy of the file’s icon (not the actual file itself) you may need to find the original at times. To do that, just click on the alias and press Command-R; the “real” file appears on screen in its Finder window.
